Fr. Jett Villarin, SJ of Manila Observatory
Fr Jose Ramon Villarin SJ is the immediate past president of the Ateneo de Manila University. He holds a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences from Georgia Tech, an MS in Physics from Marquette University, and BS in Physics from Ateneo de Manila. He is a member of the National Panel of Technical Experts of the Climate Change Commission of the Philippines. His past commitments include serving as lead reviewer of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, in which capacity he audited the greenhouse gas emissions of developed countries; and as member of the UN Consultative Group of Experts, which helped strengthen the capacity of developing countries to deal with climate change. He was also a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a global group of scientists that received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 with former US Vice President Al Gore. He is coordinating author of “The 2016 Philippine Climate Change Assessment: The Physical Science Basis” which was written with several Filipino scientists to evaluate the state of climate science in the country. He continues to serve as Senior Science Adviser of the Manila Observatory, and to chair Synergeia, an NGO dedicated to public education reform in the country. He is currently on sabbatical and is preparing to go back to teaching and research.

Manny Garibay of Linangan Art Residency
Emmanuel “Manny” Garibay b. 1962 is known for his expressionist figurative style and the keen socio-political content of many of his works. He believes art can help awaken people’s consciousness so they can pull themselves out of their despondency and bring about empowered change. Aside from being a prolific internationally established painter, he’s also an active cultural organizer who has headed various art and cultural organizations since his student days. He is currently chairman of Artletics, an artist-led organization that empowers communities through art education. Artletics runs the Linangan Art Residency Program in Alfonso, Cavite which hones artistic and leadership skills in young talents through mentored studio practice, art classes, and immersion in community-building projects.

David Loughran of Emerging Islands
David Loughran is an independent curator and creative director based in La Union. In 2018, he co-opened LIMBO, a midnight gallery and bar in Makati that gave way to emerging contemporary artists finding their experimental voice in a community built on creative symbiosis. He employs a fiction-as-framework approach in his curatorial practice, and is interested in alternative world-making projects, and the conceptual spaces that exist between art and design.

Nicola Sebastian of Emerging Islands
Nicola Sebastian is a writer, surfer, and National Geographic explorer living in La Union. She is interested in “islandness,” both as space and sensibility. She graduated with an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University, New York, where she also taught fiction writing to undergraduates. She is working on an ecological memoir on disaster, discovery, and the Philippines.

Alexis Oshima of Butanding Barrio
Alexis grew up swimming in El Nido waters when the coral reefs were still clinging onto life, before living out her formal education years in small, medium and large cities: Oxford, London and Manila, perpetually vacillating between science and art. She now finds herself back in nature trying to meld the two.

Charlie Co of The Orange Project Artist Residency
(b.1960, Negros) has produced more than 40 solo exhibitions since 1983, presented internationally in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and The Philippines. A mature and prolific career, Co established his own distinctive style early on, an individuality that has awarded him many accolades among them the 13 Artists Award (1990), Juror’s Choice of The 6th Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards (1999), an Artist in Residence in Japan, China and Australia, Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan (Pintura) (2003), and the Dr. Jose Rizal Award for Excellence (2007). Furthermore, Co has represented the Philippines in important regional surveys including Brazil’s 23rd Sao Paulo Biennale (1996), 2nd Asia Pacific Triennial (Australia 1996),“Asian Modernism” at the JapanFoundation Asian Cultural Centre, Tokyo (1995, traveling to Bangkok and Jakarta). Despite his successes Co’s practice has remained deeply rooted to his home of Bacolod City, where he runs and co-owns Orange Project supporting emerging Visayan talent. Co was pivotal in establishing VIVA EX-CON (Visayan Visual Art Exhibition and Conference) in 1990 and is currently the longest running biennial in the Philippines. Through his career, Co has consistently recorded our times: socially alert, politically astute, and globally concerned. His paintings are loaded with symbols, deeply personal and allegorical with a vibrant palette and quick sketchy style. Co is also known for his multi-disciplinary works, turning to clay and mixed media, oil pastel, pen and ink and most recently, acrylic modelling paste on canvas. Charlie Co is represented in major public collections including the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Singapore Art Museum, Queensland Art Gallery Australia, Metropolitan Muse- um and Lopez Museum Manila, the BenCab Museum Baguio, Philippines and private collections globally.
